Summary

19.08.2025
After exploring these five key elements :
  • Lighten up the media : images, videos, fonts... everything has been carefully considered.
  • Better distribute processing : choose wisely between front-end and back-end.
  • Rethink the architecture : from the server to the protocol, simpler foundations.
  • Optimise the code : green code, lighter structures.
  • Choose the right tools : less energy-intensive languages and frameworks.
We're leaving with discoveries we never imagined before.

We didn't really know what to expect when we embarked on this hackathon, but it gave us much more than just numbers and charts : priceless knowledge, a new collective awareness, and a keener eye for those invisible details of everyday life... which, when added up, make all the difference.

What surprised us 👀

  • Huge differences: up to a 28-fold difference in consumption between two frameworks for the same processing task.
  • Practices that we thought were ‘neutral’ are actually very expensive.
  • Performance and efficiency are not incompatible, but they do not always go hand in hand naturally : they need to be considered together.

What we learned 🧠

  • The environmental impact is measurable and tangible, even on a small scale.
  • Technical choices that are invisible to the general public are sometimes the most decisive.
  • By working as a team and testing at high speed, clear and actionable answers can be obtained in a single day.

What now ?

This hackathon was not a one-shot event.
From now on :
  • Each new project will incorporate environmental impact criteria from the design phase itself.
  • Internal testing protocols will be used to compare our technical choices.
  • An internal database will be expanded to guide our decisions (and why not share it with you?).
  • We will continue to train and raise awareness among the team to ensure that this approach remains alive and well over time.

The real success of this hackathon ?

This challenge has made a difference to us.

What we thought would be a simple technical challenge turned out to be much more : a shared realisation. We all learned that every choice has an impact, and that if that impact can be positive, there is no question about it.

We have learned to look at our tools, habits and reflexes differently. Above all, we have learned to understand that digital sobriety is not a threat, but an opportunity to do better, together.

This idea will from now on guide our projects... but also, we hope, our everyday actions. Because yes, the butterfly effect is real, and it often starts with a click, or a line of code, carefully thought out.
